Choosing the right sofa:
A convertible sofa is a very practical solution, whether for welcoming guests or optimizing the layout of a studio, an apartment or a house.
It is an important purchase that deserves some thought, particularly regarding your needs in terms of sleeping, space for unfolding, and harmony with your interior.
This clever piece of furniture is one of the mechanical creations whose origins date back to the patent of the Frenchman Albert Ducrot, inventor of the convertible sofa. Since then, the models have evolved considerably, offering custom options and modern designs adapted to all styles of decoration.
The different types of sofas:
The convertible sofa simplifies everyday life by combining two essential functions: a comfortable piece of furniture to sit on and an extra or regular bed.
Thanks to sophisticated mechanisms, it can be transformed in a few seconds, smoothly and effortlessly. Here is an overview of the main models and their characteristics:
The sofa bed
This classic model, not to be confused with benches such as clic-clac or BZ, hides a mattress inside its structure. With a seat and backrest separate from the mattress, it is an ideal choice for small spaces, especially in urban areas.
The convertible sofa for everyday use
More and more people are opting for a sofa bed as their main sleeping area.
Why? Because it combines discretion, space saving and comfort. These models are available in a wide range of materials and colors to suit your decoration.
For everyday use, it is recommended to choose a Rapido sofa bed equipped with an “EXPRESS” mechanism, which opens easily and whose cushions remain attached to the structure. The quality of the mattress is crucial: choose a thickness between 13 and 16 cm and a good density adapted to your needs for optimal comfort.
Be careful though: an entry-level sofa bed may be suitable for occasional sleeping, but it will become uncomfortable if you use it every day. Choose a model that is suited to your needs, with a quality mattress and bed base.
The sofa bed for occasional use
For occasional sleeping, a metal bed base and a mattress with a density of 20 kg/m3 may be sufficient, but it will not be suitable if you decide to sleep there every day unless you equip it with a high density mattress of 40 or 55 kg/m3 and at least 14 cm thick.
The covering of your sofa bed:
The fabrics used generally benefit from the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 label, which is an ecological label for textile products, guaranteeing the absence of substances harmful to health, skin and the environment.
It certifies the safety of textiles or products used during the production process, for humans and the environment.
The Style of your convertible:
Design and trends of convertible sofas
Sofa design has evolved considerably, favoring clean lines and lightweight structures. Gone are the days of massive models with imposing lower sections: wooden legs and airy shapes now dominate, bringing a touch of modernity.
Today, the convertible sofa fits so harmoniously into our interiors that it becomes a simple option among traditional sofas. Our designers have managed to combine functionality and aesthetics, by offering modular models available with mattresses in 70, 80, 100, 120, 140 and 160 cm wide beds.
Trend: The sofa with a rounded design
In 2024, sofas with rounded shapes are establishing themselves as a benchmark in interior design. Inspired by the 70s, they seduce with their soft and organic lines, bringing conviviality and elegance to our living rooms.
Why choose a rounded sofa?
- Soothing design: Curves soften the space and create a warm atmosphere.
- Conviviality: Their enveloping shape encourages exchanges and comfort.
- Retro-chic aesthetic: Combined with materials like velvet or bouclé, they reinvent elegance with modern touches.
How to integrate it into your home?
- Trendy colors: Beige, terracotta or sage green for a natural look, or vibrant shades like cobalt blue.
- Balance: Combine it with minimalist furniture so as not to overload the space.
The rounded sofa is much more than a trend: it is a timeless and designer choice that transforms your living room into a space that is both chic and welcoming.
The influence of Nordic style
The Scandinavian trend continues to make its mark on decoration. This style is distinguished by simple shapes, natural wood legs, and fabric coverings in light and neutral shades. These tones, easily enhanced by accessories such as cushions or a plaid
The click-clack
The clic-clac, a popular choice for studios or guest rooms, is ideal for maximizing space. Its bed is positioned parallel to the wall, and its simple mechanism explains its name: by tilting the seat forward, an initial “click” is heard. Then, the mattress unfolds to form a bed, and the final “clack” occurs when the seat folds down.
Versatile but less aesthetic than a Rapido convertible sofa, the clic-clac can be transformed into a classic sofa, in a semi-reclined relaxation position, or into a bed. In the folded position, it takes up more wall space, and its depth is equivalent to that of the mattress.
The BZ
The BZ, with its bed perpendicular to the wall, is distinguished by its accordion mechanism. Once folded, its mattress takes on a “Z” shape from which it takes its name. Compact and space-saving in sofa position, it extends further into the room when unfolded into a bed. To transform it, simply pull the seat towards you; folding is done by reversing the movement, with a slight push towards the wall.
