What to check if your sofa bed creaks
How to check if your sofa bed is squeaking?
First of all, don't rush into changing everything, and first check the general condition of the structure. Here's how to do the checks:
- Make sure the legs and headboard of your sofa bed are securely fastened. Tighten the screws and nuts if necessary.
- Identify the exact location of the squeaks to effectively address them. Take the time to identify the areas that are making the noise by removing the mattress and slats.
- Remove the mattress and slats, then test the slats and frame by gently pressing on them.
What can I do to stop my sofa bed from squeaking?
If it's the metal base of your sofa bed that creaks
If it's your metal bed base that's causing the problem, we recommend applying WD 40 (this product is easily found in supermarkets, DIY stores, or online). Apply it to the areas you identified during your inspection. For example, you can apply it to the springs. If it's the frame, try tightening the mounting screws.
If it's the slatted base of your sofa bed that creaks
Slatted bed bases are the most prone to squeaking problems. The slats can rub against the headboard, causing noise. Don't worry, we'll explain how to fix this.
- If the squeaking is slight, apply a little baby powder or linseed oil (it's great for wood). You can also use a neutral soap, such as Marseille soap. This is a handy stopgap, but for a more lasting solution, use beeswax.
How to maintain your sofa bed so that it doesn't creak?
It's essential to maintain your bedding regularly. There's no better way to keep it in good condition. This is where our old tricks often come in handy (thanks, Grandma)!
Our tips for maintaining the base of your sofa bed and preventing squeaking
- Oil the inside of the bed base regularly. For metal bed bases, you can always use WD40.
- As for the slatted base , we recommend using our second ally: linseed oil. Regularly go over everything with a fine-tooth comb (fasteners, joints, etc.) to check that everything is in place.
And there you have it, that's all you have to do. Pretty simple, right? Now you're a real box spring pro. It's your turn!
